Superfamily Cicadoidea

 The Superfamily Cicadoidea contains the Family Tettigarctidae or hairy cicadas and the Family Cicadidae or true cicadas. The following selection can be used to separate these families.

Pronotum long, reaching over mesonotum; greyish brown species, noticeably hairy Select - Family Tettigarctidae (hairy cicadas)
Pronotum shorter, not reaching over mesonotum; species varying in colour, usually not hairy Select - Family Cicadidae (true cicadas)
